Open a new Terminal window and run the following command to install Rainbow Stream using the python package management system: sudo pip3 install rainbowstream While Rainbow Stream is available for Windows and Mac we are only focusing on how it works on Linux, specifically Ubuntu. It strikes the best balance between looking good and working good, and supports almost every feature you’ll need. Our favourite is the open-source Python-based Rainbow Stream. ![]() There are numerous different command line Twitter clients available for Windows, macOS and Linux. In a way, Twitter terminal apps allow you zone in on the content of tweets rather than the window dressing that accompanies them a way to keep Twitter in focus without you losing focus, if you will. Using Twitter in a terminal window can be a great way to harness the value of the tool in a work or study environment, but without distraction of auto-playing gifs and lurid celebrity selfies. Twitter is a visual platform these days, with avatars, embedded photos, videos, gifs, polls, those new-fangled Twitter Moments - all part-and-parcel of the microblogging service’s reason d’être.īut at it’s core Twitter is a text service - it was initially set up as an SMS-based service - and this means it “just works” when viewed through a text-based tool like a terminal emulator. UPDATE: Since version 8.6 or so, the chance for window size and position to reset to default has greatly increased. This is the Twitter app you should be using, with one or ten accounts. Needing to use Command-W to put away an image makes it more likely to accidentally close the main window if it has focus, and then you've quit the app when you didn't want to. I have run into the bug mentioned in other reviews: Randomly on launch, maybe 1 out of 10 times, my window size and position has reset to default. It's faster in every way, and of course, supports all official Twitter functions. What a pleasure it is to come back to this new app. Twitter forced me to switch to another app (Tweetbot) on the desktop, after they abandoned their old client app years ago.
